Monthly Handicap at Majura

Today:
Distance: Race - 10 km plus warm up 1.3 km
Time: Race - 50' 22"
Rate: Race - 5' 02" per km
Finished: near the end
Weather: mostly cloudy, temp 8-9 degrees, humidity 70%, wind strong NW up to 50 kmph
Week: 11.3 km, April: 385.85 km, Year: 1498.25 km

Conditions very unsuitable for racing at the monthly handicap, especially over the longest distance we use at 10 km. Not much shelter at the start/finish area, the houses provided nothing during the running, and the wind seemed to be against all the way.
Maybe the long run yesterday took a bit out of system, and although slow for race pace, I felt Ok all the way. Glad to just keep the hat on, never really warmed up even with two tops on again.

  • That's a lot of long, crazy running you've done over the last 2 days. Good on you. I'm impressed. Recover and rest well now.

There's an interesting discussion on Coolrunning at the moment about recommended no. of training kms for an ultra. A few ultra posters say ~120km/week which sounds okay (or may be a bit light on?) per week but what I'm more curious about is no. of kms in max long run. I wonder what you and guys like Martin F recommend for long(est) run pre ultra of ~100km, and how many of those long(est) runs do you (and Martin et al) recommend?

P.S. I really did sleep in on Sat. Sorry. Take heart, I still ran long(ish) in the rubbish weather just like you and all the other crazies. Ugh!

  • Phew - great back-up after such a long run yesterday. You're so right, the wind and temp today was revolting! Good course though. Just a shame about the weather.

  • Sounds like my beers were safe. You couldn't have finished ahead of CJ and Strewth with a time like that.

50.8k! Only 23 for me, and that was in two runs!
